"Women don't invest in startups"—said my consultant.

I hired a marketing consultant for Immunomatics’ fundraising campaign.

A few weeks later, I discovered he had set our paid ads to target only men.

“Why did you exclude women?”— I asked.

His response: "Targeting women would be a waste of your ad budget because women do not invest in startups.”

I looked into the data. Statistically, he wasn’t wrong—men dominate startup investing. But as a founder, you have to decide if you want to reflect the status quo or challenge it.

If we only present investment opportunities to men, we are actively reinforcing the very bias that created those statistics in the first place.

I told the consultant to target both genders equally.

I'm proud to say that Immunomatics is backed by outstanding female leaders, including our Lead Investor, a global scientist and executive leader, and a health informatics leader recognized with multiple fellowships in the field.

Immunomatics is a healthtech startup developing AI-based transplant donor matching technology to help reduce life-threatening complications for patients.

We believe opportunities to support innovation should be visible to everyone.
